Gendered Bodies: Personnel Policies and the Culture of the British Army
This research focused on culture and gender in the British Army.
- Project Dates: 2001 - 2002 (11 months)
- Project Leader: Rachel Woodward
- Staff: Rachel Woodward and Patricia Winter
- Sponsors: ESRC and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) via the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) under the Joint ESRC/MoD Research Grant Scheme.
The research, funded by the ESRC and MoD, investigated the ways in which military culture as a ‘whole way of life’, and as a set of gendered social practices, influences the development and implementation of policies aimed at women’s participation in the Army. It looked at a range of policies developed over the past three years (prior to 2001), including those that were currently under review.
