Integrated Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas (IDARA)

This project sought to identify the key problems and discuss strategies for an integrated development of Agriculture and Rural Areas in the first group of CEECs acceding the EU.

  • Project Dates: 2000 - 2003
  • Project Leader: Matthew Gorton
  • Sponsors: EU Framework 5

The research addressed three related policy areas, namely the identification of adequate policy measures and institutional structures for the introduction of an integrated rural development policy in the CEEC, a thorough analysis of agricultural diversification patterns and its potential role in rural development, and finally the development of a simulation model that allowed for a comprehensive estimation of the impact of different policy measures on agricultural production, budget and income and, in turn, its consequences for rural development strategies.
