My role as a NUSU Activities Assistant...

Dental student Aimee Robbins works as an activity assistant supporting home and international students to give activities a go!

6 March 2025

At the start of this academic year, I applied to become an Activities Assistant with our student union.  A position I was fortunate enough to be selected for. My role is to execute activities organised by the Activities team at NUSU and support students to enjoy them and socialise. It's been an incredible job opportunity.  I have been lucky enough to meet some brilliant students from all across the world and showcase some of the hidden gems of the North East.

Coordinating activities ranging from social gaming on the Nintendo Switch to visiting National Trust properties across the county, NUSU organise activities for any students studying at Newcastle University. My favourite element of the job is the diversity of people I am lucky enough to meet.  A wide variety of first year and international students that have such unique backgrounds but all sharing the want to make friends and explore. I feel very privileged to support students in making new connections and settling into their new environment. It's especially rewarding when I can catch up with people I've met a few weeks or months down the line on campus and see them thriving in and out of their studies.

Furthermore, as a dental student, it has been a great opportunity to further involve myself in university life. I thoroughly enjoy having a job which not only supports my studies but improves my organisational, interpersonal and time-management skills. It gives me the experience of having responsibility, working within a team of students and being confident beginning conversations. I'd encourage anyone looking for a role to build confidence and experience working with a myriad of people to seize opportunities such as this one while at university.
