Oral and Dental Research Podcast
Lead by Dr Susan Bissett, this brand-new podcast series aims to change the landscape of inaccessibility surrounding early careers research, breaking down barriers to create a less intimidating space where people can learn from the real life experiences of researchers.
An academic dental hygienist and early career researcher at Newcastle University’s School of Dental Sciences, Dr Bissett is starting this podcast as a way for new researchers to hear first-hand what the lived experience of the process is like, from a whole range of experts. This series will walk through all that goes into finding a research question, applying for funding, delivering to research deadlines, and of course, how to recover when things go wrong. The episodes are twenty minute insights into the comprehensive, exciting and sometimes daunting world of early career research.
The series will speak to researchers at different stages of their career, from those just starting out, through to academics who have an international reputation; taking us on whistle-stop tours of their careers and research fields, sharing their journeys and the all important lessons they have earned along the way. The series is going to explore an amazing breadth of topics such as: educational dental research, transitional oral biosciences, oral health care and epidemiology.
The first episode
To start it all off in our first episode on Wednesday, 18th January, Dr Bissett interviews Charlotte Currie: a NIHR Doctoral research fellow.
Charlotte talks about her experiences of applying for fellowship funding and describes her research which is about problem-orientated dental attendance. She shares some results and gives us insight into the best bits and challenges she has encountered along the way.
You can find our new podcast on the School's research page or click here to link directly to the first episode.
In this project I wanted to make people realise the depth and breadth of research going on here at NSDS, but also to break down some barriers.
The founding idea of this podcast was to inspire, to provide a novel format for the dissemination of research happening in the School of Dental Sciences; to enable networking, to facilitate knowledge mobilisation and generally to support early career researchers. However, in the process Dr Bissett found how this format affords itself to a wider audience – it is more accessible than listening to research presentations and the easily digestible, conversational tone means that sometimes lofty subjects become less intimidating.
The podcast presents the opportunity to share knowledge with people who may be doubting their abilities and struggling to understand how to begin their research in the right way, offering a space to build confidence in oneself while learning from industry experts.
