Ian Ellis

Associate Clinical Lecturer

Background

 I graduated from Newcastle University in 1984,  having worked for 31 years as a general dental practitioner , 22 years of which I was a practice owner. This included a period of ten years as a trainer in Dental Foundation Training and General Professional Training. For an additional ten years I was an NHS post graduate dental tutor.

I worked  for 25 years in a Maxillo-facial Unit providing rehabilitative management for head and neck cancer patients as well as training foundation dentists in minor oral surgery.

 I began as part time (1 session) Associate Clinical Lecturer in 2006. This became substantive  in 2009 , leading  The Complete Denture Course and Becoming Clinical Teaching Lead in Removable Prosthodontics.

From 2019 I became Academic Lead for Removable Prosthodontics

Research

My current research activity is in innovating novel ways of delivering teaching which encourages independent clinically justified practice. This includes developing low tech' simulation for hands on teaching of complete and partial denture skills in dental mannequins. I am particularly interested in the role of play in developing clinical skills. Further applications in teaching restoration of tooth surface loss using direct build up techniques.

I also have interest in multi-professional teaching within disciplines and between different specialities.

I am a member of the School of Dental Sciences Dental Educational Research Group

Teaching

I am Clinical Teaching Lead for Removable Prosthodontics, and Stage 5 BDS Senior Tutor. My role is in the delivery and support of clinical teaching for dental undergraduates and post graduates. Leading the following courses:-

DEN3113: Partial Denture Clinical Skills

DEN4107: Restorative Management of Tooth Loss

 Delivering teaching in both BDS and BSc programmes on topics as diverse as Occlusion, and Professional Development planning.

 In addition I supervise on the restorative dentistry MClin Dent Clinical Programme.
