National Oral Health Surveys

Our expertise is in oral epidemiology. Our work involves collaborating with national health bodies, large social survey organisations and colleagues from academic institutions. We ensure that findings from national surveys of the nation’s oral health are relevant to the changing needs and demands of society, our funders and ultimately, policymakers.

Oral epidemiology (oral health surveillance) involves our contribution to:

  • The design and evolution of national clinical and self-report survey measures
  • Training and the calibration of clinical survey examiners (dentists and dental therapists)
  • Analysis of large datasets and data interpretation
  • The identification of national oral health trends over time

We’re currently involved with delivering England’s Adult Oral Health Survey (2023) which is part of the decennial national survey series of adult dental health. Newcastle also has a strong track record with contributing to the national decennial surveys of Children’s Dental Health.
