Oral Immunology

The oral immunology group explores the immunopathogenesis of oral diseases, with a particular focus on understanding the mechanistic interactions of the host immune response with complex multispecies biofilms and identifying novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets.

We investigate
  • The role of neuroendocrine mediator signalling systems (e.g., the cholinergic system) in the aetiopathogenesis of oral inflammatory and infectious diseases.
  • Neuroendocrine mediators as novel biomarkers of oral diseases, and their role in the bidirectional links between oral and systemic diseases.
  • Novel complex models of mucosal surfaces to investigate bidirectional neuroendocrine cross talk between complex biofilms and the host barrier defences.
