Our Photography Style
Our staff and students, their stories and the energy they create on campus, should be the main focus of our photography, with building-only shots used sparingly to support the narrative of our message.
Top tips
Here are some tips on our photography style:
- Show people in their natural/working environments – the scene should look ‘captured’ not contrived
- Represent, promote and celebrate the diversity of our people across our marketing materials
- Use a closer crop on students as they interact with each other at key moments to ensure a natural/reportage style of photography
- Select rich, vibrant images with deep, bold and contrasting colours where possible to portray a friendly, collaborative and welcoming environment
- Ensure a range of compositions and mix of students are represented when commissioning a student shoot or selecting images
- Use abstract shots of buildings/close-up shots on architectural features as part of the portfolio to give greater context
- Extend abstract shots to signage and specialist equipment to provide a greater variety of images and ensure a rich sense of place
Portraits
Portraits show an individual as the sole focus of the image and we use these to shine a spotlight on our people. Here are some pointers when selecting or commissioning portraits/hero shots:
- Alternate between close-up head and shoulder images to half or full-body shots
- A smiling subject helps promote the University as a welcoming and happy place to work and study
- Choose a mix of images with some subjects looking away from camera and some into camera
- Ensure enough background is available to allow a text box or graphic overlay to be applied to the side of the image if required
- If using background screens or lighting, capture some images showing this equipment in situ – giving a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how the image has been set up
- Capture any relevant detail/abstract shots as secondary/supporting images eg, close-up images of equipment, signage, buildings that are relevant to add context
- Show off a variety of locations if possible, using interesting and relevant backgrounds for individual subjects
