Jon is Co-Director of the Secondary PGCE Programme, Lead for Secondary Science and Senior Lecturer in Education. He has valuable experience as an expert classroom practitioner, and was previously Head of Department / Curriculum Leader for Science, at Longbenton High School (formerly Longbenton Community College). In this role, not only was he responsible for the improvement of science teaching and learning, but he also played a significant role in the development and adoption of online learning resources for the college.
Jon has a passion for improving learning outcomes and teaching through the effective application of technology, and is co-founder of Video Enhanced Observation Ltd (VEO) - one of HASS Faculty's first commercial spin-out companies. VEO is a low cost app which integrates video technology with graphical and text based feedback for recording and tracking presentations, conversations and interactions for use as a CPD / ITT coaching and development tool, it has been adopted by schools, colleges, universities, healthcare providers and commercial organisations worldwide. Jon's academic interests include:
- the use of AI to support trainee teachers and practicing teachers in reducing planning and preparation time, while maximising the time available for creative thinking, reflection and practical professional learning;
- improving the quality of teaching and learning through more effective teacher coaching, mentoring, deliberate practice and direct instruction;
- effective modelling in science teaching - how modelling can support pupil learning and effective teaching of complex and abstract scientific ideas;
- moving mobile technology from under the desk, encouraging the positive and proactive use of such devices in the classroom.
Before teaching, Jon worked as a business development manager and environmental consultant within the Northumbrian Water Group.
