I am a qualified Speech and Language Therapist, completing my degree here at Newcastle University in 2008. Since that time and until 2013 I worked as a specialist therapist in the NHS. My area of specialism was in primary and secondary school age pupils with Autism and complex communication disorders.
My work included working as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) assessing children with complex communication disorders. It involved collaboration with parents, carers and other members of the MDT in developing appropriate packages of care for individuals with speech, language and communication needs. A large part of my role involved developing and delivering training packages to parents and professionals. This sparked an interest in teaching which motivates me within my current position.
I left the NHS to join the team in Speech and Language Sciences at Newcastle in 2013 on a temporary basis to cover Professor Cristina McKean's teaching and I have never left.

Other Interests
When I left the NHS in 2013 I also opened up my own local business 'Northern Kings Gym' a Thai boxing school with my husband. My passion for teaching/coaching others really started long ago as I taught Thai boxing and kickboxing here at the university for many years, from my student days until I had my daughter in 2016. Northern Kings Gym still delivers coaching to Newcastle University's Thai boxing and Kickboxing societies today.
I am also a Thai boxing coach, qualified personal trainer and nutrition coach and Thai boxing judge. I still enjoy teaching a few classes a week and keeping active myself. I do voluntary work for a Thai boxing national governing body. I am passionate about promoting the sport, improving participation and access and the physical and mental health of children and adults. I take a lead in events organising and safeguarding on the executive board for Muay Thai Great Britain and was formally the social media officer for the United Kingdom Muay Thai Federation. I also enjoy Olympic weight lifting and yoga. When I am not engaged in any of these activities, I will usually be exploring the great outdoors and the many wonderful places the North East has to offer with my two children.
Just as a career in Speech and Language Therapy is extremely rewarding. I find teaching others incredibly rewarding. I am passionate about developing the next generation of SLT's to be independent, critical thinkers, using evidence based and innovative teaching methods. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Authority, demonstrating my commitment to professionalism in learning and teaching in higher education.
I have a keen interest in Technology Enhanced Learning. I am module leader for the BSc and MSc Speech and Language Pathology sensory module which was the first blended learning module in SLS. I am proud it has been used as an example of good practise, by the Learning and Teaching Development Service in their past training courses and within the school.

I am a project co-investigator for a Newcastle University Global Education and Community Fund titled: 'Collaborative intercultural encounters for global educational experiences'. This project aims to enable present-in-person intercultural encounters across the school in order to (a) facilitate dialogue and collaboration among home and international students across different disciplines for global educational experiences, (b) foster intercultural and multilingual awareness, collaboration and team work, and thus employability skills, (c) develop awareness of multiple worldviews and ways of life, (d) support understandings of global citizenship, reflexivity, and social responsibility. To achieve these aims, we will organise a series of collaborative, project-based activities throughout the 2022-23 academic year, which will be co-designed and co-run with our student representatives and post-graduate demonstrators. We will develop materials and resources as well as evaluation and certification tools.

I am an academic on a Teaching and Scholarship Contract. I am passionate about pedagogical research; I carefully and continuously reflect on my practise and in turn have made lots of developments to the SLS curriculum and my pedagogical practices. I love to share and develop good practise with others.
My current work involves exploring the cultural competence of SLS students at Newcastle with the aim to improve, diversify and improve the inclusivity of our curriculum and thus the cultural competence of our students. My hope is to compete my PhD thesis on this topic.
I am also co-investigator on an international project titled ‘An international qualitative exploration of students’ views of their preparedness to work collaboratively with families of children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)’. The aims of the project are a) To explore students’ perceptions of the key people in the lives of children with speech language and communication needs (SLCN) who are involved in the intervention process. b) to investigate student’s views on the construct of ‘collaboration’ with families of children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) and to map these views against theory. c) To explore students’ experiences of collaboration with families. d) To explore students’ views on their preparedness to work collaboratively with families. e) To investigate students’ perceptions of facilitators and barriers to developing their competence and confidence in collaborating with families.
I am also co project lead for a Newcastle Global Fund titled ‘Collaborative International Encounters in ECLS’. The impact data from our project will be used to evaluate how person in person intercultural encounters contribute to students belonging, intercultural awareness and communication skills and home making on the internationalised campus, as well as graduate employability skills.
