Presentation Task Guidelines
Congratulations on securing an interview for Newcastle University’s PGCE programme. As an essential part of our selection process for this course we ask you to prepare a short presentation which will last 5 minutes.

Computer Science
During the interview day, you will have 5 minutes and 2 PowerPoint slides to present the rationale behind how you would choose to START a lesson with an ‘Introductory’ activity aimed at Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 students.
This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in any aspect ofcomputer science at KS3.
Please base your presentation topic on a relevant area of the KS3 National Curriculum for Computing Programme of Study.
Try to be as creative as possible in how you introduce the topic.
Following your 5-minute presentation the interview panel should have learned something new about your chosen aspect of computing and the rationale behind how you might start teaching it.
NOTE: Not everyone on the panel will be a computing specialist so it might be easiest to pick a topic which doesn’t require too much specialist knowledge to make sense of your presentation content.
Design and Technology
During the interview day, you will have 5 minutes and 2 PowerPoint slides to present the rationale behind how you would choose to START a lesson with an ‘Introductory’ activity aimed at Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 students.
This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in any aspect of design and technology at KS3.
Please base your presentation topic on a relevant area of the KS3 National Curriculum for Computing Programme of Study
Try to be as creative as possible in how you introduce the topic.

English
During the interview, you will have 5 minutes and 2 PowerPoint slides to present the rationale behind how you would choose to START a lesson on one of the following poems.
This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in the poem you have chosen. This lesson would be delivered to a mixed-attainment class of Yr10, GCSE pupils:

This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in any one of the images and topic titles shown below.
Try to be as creative as possible in how you introduce the topic.
Following your 5-minute presentation the interview panel should have learned something new about your chosen topic and the rationale behind how you might start teaching it.
NOTE: Not everyone on the panel will be a geography specialist so ensure that your content doesn't require too much specialist knowlage to make sense of your presentation.
History
During the interview day, you will have 5 minutes and 2 PowerPoint slides to present the rationale behind how you would choose to START a lesson with an ‘Introductory’ activity aimed at Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 students.
This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in any aspect of history at KS3.

Modern Foreign Languages
During the interview day, you will have 5 minutes and 2 PowerPoint slides to present the rationale behind how you would choose to START a lesson with an ‘Introductory’ activity aimed at Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 students.
This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in any aspect of MFL at KS3.
Please base your presentation topic on a relevant area of the KS3 National Curriculum for Computing Programme of Study.
Try to be as creative as possible in how you introduce the topic.
Following your 5-minute presentation the interview panel should have learned something new about your chosen topic and the rationale behind how you might start teaching it.
NOTE: Not everyone on the panel will be a language specialist so it might be easiest to pick a topic which doesn’t require too much specialist knowledge to make sense of your presentation content.
Sciences
During the interview day, you will have 5 minutes and 2 PowerPoint slides to present the rationale behind how you would choose to START a lesson with an ‘Introductory’ activity aimed at Year 10 and Year 11 students.
This activity should focus on how you would introduce and get students excited by and interested in any aspect of science within one of the following topic areas:
NB: You do NOT have to choose a topic from within your specialism.
Try to be as creative as possible in how you introduce the topic.
Following your 5-minute presentation the interview panel should have learned something new about your chosen aspect of science and the rationale behind how you might start teaching it.
NOTE: Not everyone on the panel will be a science specialist so ensure that your content doesn’t require too much specialist knowledge to make sense of your presentation
What would we like to see?
- Creative idea/s about how to get the class engaged and how you might develop understanding about the
topic from the very start of the lesson. Please consider:
o What will you show them?
o What will you ask them?
o What will they do?
o … and why? - Clarity of presentation & communication, including the accuracy of the target language / specialist
vocabulary. - An indication of subject and curricular knowledge (appropriate to this age and stage of teaching).
- Your enthusiasm, imagination, and passion for the subject.
- The preparation you have undertaken.
We know you will be nervous but try to make eye contact with your interviewers to show how engaging, friendly and confident you can be. A smile also makes a great first impression.
