Energy Racism - Dr Trevor Ngwane from the University of Johannesburg

We will hear from Dr Trevor Ngwane from the University of Johannesburg.

About the speaker:

Dr Trevor Ngwane is a scholar-activist who works in the academic and political spheres. He obtained his PhD at the University of Johannesburg in 2017 after two decades of political activism in various social movements and political organisations. In 2021, he was appointed as director of the Centre for Sociological Research and Practice at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dr Terri-Anne is a research associate at the Univeristy of Johannesburg working on the National Education Coordinating Committee (NECC), run by the UJ South African Research Chair in Teaching and Learning and the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT).

 our second episode in the Energy Justice and Ethics Webinar series.

Dr Felix Dorn spoke about (geo-)political economy of the energy transition, the case of lithium for our second webinar in the Justice and Ethics series.

About the speaker:

Dr Felix Dorn works as university assistant (post-doc) at the Department of Development Studies, University of Vienna. He studied International Economic Studies at Innsbruck University and at the National University of Córdoba (Argentina). In February 2021 he finished his PhD at Innsbruck University with a focus on political ecology and the global lithium production network. His current research focuses on the Global Political Economy of decarbonization and the energy transition and the accompanying valorization of climate change commodities such as lithium, copper, and green hydrogen in Latin America. Felix Dorn has been a visiting researcher at the National University of Tucumán (Argentina), the Catholic University of the North (Chile), Utrecht University (Netherlands) and at the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA) of the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands). His knowledge transfer-oriented contributions include several photo series, articles and a documentary film, and have been published by Spiegel Online, Der Standard, ORF, Deutschlandfunk, Die Presse and others.
