Improving the efficiency of polymer electrolyte fuel cells.

Project title

Improved efficiency of polymer electrolyte fuel cells via higher temperature ionic liquid membranes

Supervisors

Project description

We are developing highly efficient polymer electrolyte membranes. We are basing them on novel ionic liquid structures used in high temperature fuel cells.

The project will target novel protic ionic liquids with two or more acidic hydrogens. We can use these as sources for free protons to promote the conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membranes. Moreover, these liquids can form robust membranes with polymer matrices. They will acquire most of the required characteristics of the polymer electrolyte membranes. These characteristics include high thermal, chemical, and mechanical stabilities.

The research will open new horizons to synthesise compatible polymer electrolyte membranes. These will be based on some novel protic ionic liquids. They will enhance the durability and conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membranes at high temperatures. In this way, high temperature fuel cells will be more affordable and can be more applicable on an industrial scale.
