Project description
In-wheel electric motors provide integrated direct drive traction in electric vehicles. Classical automotive components include drive shafts, gears and differentials. These can be eliminated by integrating the drive and the motor in the wheel.
We are investigating novel topologies for in-wheel machines. These would allow an increase in torque density for an enclosed volume without increasing the permanent magnet mass. We are investigating Transverse Flux machines, IP Machines and Halbach array machines.
