Centre for Climate and Environmental Resilience

Our research and teaching is building resilience and helping to limit the effects of climate and environmental change.

The Centre for Climate and Environmental Resilience (CCER) is a transdisciplinary Centre of Excellence. We research the environmental and societal issues caused by intensifying global change.

We are now in an epoch in which human and natural systems are inextricably linked. Altered and degraded systems are having knock-on consequences for human societies and biodiversity.

Climate and environmental resilience

Climate and environmental change mean that our society and natural ecosystems need to be able to anticipate, prepare for and respond to hazardous events and disturbances. This means increasing resilience by assessing and coping with changes in risk. This challenge will need an integrated, transdisciplinary approach. We bring together experts from:

  • engineering
  • business
  • mathematics
  • physics
  • natural sciences
  • education
  • social science

Our centre provides a vital research base for taking appropriate action.

Our mission

Our mission is to deliver the solutions we need to increase climate and environmental resilience through our expertise and international leadership. CCER acts as a catalyst for the creation of a solutions-driven research programme to address this challenge. To achieve this we must accelerate transdisciplinary working. We achieve this through:

  • world-class research
  • education
  • strong partnerships

Our research goals

We are pursuing our mission by:

  • developing the underpinning knowledge base essential for solution-led research
  • informing policy and management responses for the UK and global climate and environmental resilience
  • building partnerships between government, industry and civil society to apply new knowledge
  • engaging the business sector, from micro businesses to global corporations, ensuring healthy ecosystems for future generations
  • training the next generation of transdisciplinary researchers in climate and environmental resilience

We are engaging businesses in taking responsibilities for ensuring a healthy global ecosystem. These range from micro and small businesses to global corporations.

We work to support progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially:

Newcastle University also leads the way in testing and implementing sustainable solutions. This includes on campus and supporting the city’s journey towards a net zero status.

CCER also contributes towards goals set out in other Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence.
