Information for students
External examiners are appointed to maintain academic standards and be the guardians of national standards. They also check the processes we put in place, and act as critical friends.
While reporting on our standards, they can identify examples of exemplary practice and make suggestions to improve your learning experience as students. For context, the UK Quality Code provides guidance on quality practice across the UK higher education sector, and also contains a section on external expertise.
Information on external examiners at Newcastle University is available in this guide for students.
