Professor Matthew Grenby
Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation
Matthew Grenby has been PVC for Research and Innovation since October 2022. He leads research and innovation across the University, both in Newcastle and at the campuses in Singapore and Malaysia. He is responsible for implementing and developing the University’s Research Strategy, so as to ensure Newcastle fulfils its mission to deliver world-leading research for discovery and impact.
Matthew joined Newcastle’s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics in 2005 as Reader in Children’s Literature, and was appointed Professor of Eighteenth-Century Studies in 2012. He founded the Newcastle University Humanities Research Institute in 2014, and was appointed Dean of Research and Innovation for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2018.
His own research focusses on eighteenth-century Britain, looking particularly at children’s literature and history, political fiction, electoral participation and culture, and the history of young people’s engagement with heritage sites.
