2. Membership

 

Ex officio members: 

(a) The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Engagement and Place) (or their nominee) 

Appointed members: 

(b) Two Co-Chairs, appointed by Senate.

(c) Ten members appointed by Senate. 

(d) Two student members appointed annually by the Students’ Union. 

(e) Not more than four members co-opted by the Committee from within or outside the University. 

The members in (b), (c) and (e) shall hold office for three years and shall be eligible for re-appointment. 

 

3. Terms of reference   

(a) To agree and execute a dynamic and successful public lectures programme which explores to the full opportunities to bring to the region speakers with national and international esteem who are acknowledged experts in their field. 

(b) To contribute to the University vision to be a world class civic university by shaping and responding to regional, national and international societal challenges such as ageing, sustainability and social renewal. 

(c) To appoint sub-committees to arrange, within the terms and financial limits of the 15 named lecture endowments, a programme of Public Named Lectures to be delivered within the University. 

(d) To advertise lectures organised by specialist groups that are included within the Public Lectures 2 programme; including lectures organised by the Military Education Committee, the Tyneside Geographical Society, and other such groups’ annual lectures. 

(e) To appoint a Sub-Committee, with appropriate membership, to nominate an artist or artists to give the Henry Miller Memorial Concert and to make the necessary arrangements for the concert. 

(f) To arrange 3 or 4 special research lectures annually to be delivered by academic members of staff (not limited to professorial staff) and one lecture per semester by early-career researchers from a rotating roster of faculties. 

(g)  To be responsible, within the limits set by Council, for the financing of public music events arranged by the Performance Administrator in the School of Arts and Culture. 

(h)  To report annually to Senate the lectures and attendance.
