About Raphaela
Choosing Newcastle
Newcastle University stood out to me because of its focus on research and areas of expertise of staff - I have an interest in migration research and I found that it would be a good fit with Newcastle. I was also encouraged by Newcastle's work in social justice, and engagement with the local community.
Studying at Newcastle
I enjoyed every aspect of my Master's degree in Sociology and Social Research at Newcastle University. The modules were very interesting, and I learned a lot about the different ways in which Sociology can be applied to various aspects of our everyday lives.
In seminars, I was able to exchange ideas with my peers and develop my presentation skills in student-led discussions. In the Social Research modules, I was able to develop my research skills, and I learned about different research methods beyond the more traditional ones. This was very useful in preparation for the data collection for my dissertation where I could apply what I had learned.
I also felt integrated into the wider Sociology department, and there were opportunities to present ongoing research at internal research cafes and interact with staff.
The module leaders were always supportive and I always found their advice and guidance constructive. I particularly appreciated the support from my MA supervisor during the final stages of the course as I was writing my dissertation. Those discussions helped me to be critical of my own work, improve, and develop it further. I always felt encouraged to pursue the ideas I had suggested.
Last but not least, Newcastle and the North East are a great place to live!
Career Profile
My supervisor's knowledge of career development and opportunities was invaluable for my further studies at Newcastle for a PhD in Sociology.
I now work as a Senior Social Researcher with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
