Politics Careers
Every year, a number of our graduates choose to enter careers in politics-related fields across the UK, Europe and the world.
In the Politics department, we take the employability of our students very seriously. The learning experience we give our graduates is specifically designed to equip you with the skills to succeed. These include:
- the ability to quickly understand and assess a new problem or issue
- working effectively both as an individual and part of a team
- effective oral and written communication skills
- time and project management
- research skills, including qualitative and quantitative research methods
Internships and work experience
Politics offers a range of internships and work experience opportunities to students. We run an innovative and popular module for our final year students modelled around a work placement that counts towards your degree.
Our research networks connect you and your learning to the world outside of university. Our close links to governmental and intergovernmental bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector ensure the relevance of your academic work and help you to build crucial connections.
Careers advice
Politics students are able to take advantage of the excellent resources, support and connections provided by the university, including the ncl+ service. Careers advisers put our students in touch with volunteer mentors from the private and public sectors.
They assist with valuable work placements and offer helpful advice about possible career trajectories.
In year three, students in politics can take the innovative Career Development Module to get a real taste of the world of work to inform their future choices.
Our degrees are endorsed by the University’s Graduate Skills Framework. Newcastle University works closely with key employers to define the graduate skills which, when added to a degree, will give students the skills they need in life beyond university.
