Amy's PhD project title is 'How does the gendered labour market impact social construction and culture development in the Royal Air Force? An intersectional perspective.'. Read more about Amy's research.
Project description
My research will examine how gender and the other multitude of conflicting intersectional identities of military personnel impact the social construction and speciality of the gender culture in the UK Armed Forces, and more specifically the Royal Air Force.
By examining the experiences of female service personnel with an intersectional perspective and a gendered axis, and through my position as a female veteran, enabling me to underpin my data collection with reflexivity, the research will examine how the negotiation and marginalisation of gendered and racialised identities impact the social construction and RAF culture.
Research interests
Having recently left the Royal Air Force and directly experienced the gender culture of the UK Armed Forces, my research engages heavily with the concepts of reflexivity.
Through this I consider the unique level of criticality that military veterans, and particularly female veterans bring to academia.
Within the project I explore key themes of literature including gender, identity and belonging, and organisational culture, and use several critical approaches including feminist, critical race theory and intersectionality.
Personal interests
I am a former physiotherapist and elite athlete, and remain passionate about the benefits of exercise and training.
I continue to compete for the Royal Air Force in Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon, and am a part time yoga instructor. In my spare time I enjoy mountaineering and climbing.
