PhD completed in 2015: Disputes of offence: Making sense of the discursive construction of political correctness. This research uses data from popular cultural and media sources using various discourse and visual analytical approaches including Bakhtinian dialogism and Hall's representational analysis. It argues that controversies arising from the use of language and representation in everyday life are increasingly attached to notions of self-hood or personal identity. The project maintains that disputes of offence relating to wider social inequalities are more usefully understood through exploration of the construction of both personal and wider social identities.
My interests lie in the field of cultural sociology and include the role of language and representation in everyday life. I am particularly interested in the relationship between language and social identities, divisions and inequalities.
I am Module Leader for SOC1030, The Sociological Imagination.
