Academic and professional background
I completed a MA and PhD in the Department of Politics at Newcastle University in the 1990s. On completion of my PhD I joined the Health Policy Unit at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as a Senior Research Assistant. Between 2000 and 2010, I worked as a researcher in education and skills, widening participation and public policy at Universities for the North East and Northumbria University. I also taught at Northumbria University and for the Open University. I came back to the Department of Politics in January 2011 as a teaching assistant and in August 2016 I was appointed to the post of Lecturer.

In the past I have conducted and published research on globalization; global social movements; global health governance; mature student support and retention; and access to higher education.
I am currently in the process of conducting research on South Korea as an elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
