Sociology Masters Programmes
Join a vibrant and diverse postgraduate community of students on our Sociology, or Sociology and Social Research degree programme.
Why choose Newcastle for your Sociology Master's degree?
Do you want to focus on a specific part of Sociology, change your career, or explore something new?
Our postgraduate degrees offer exciting pathways into learning key Sociology concepts. You’ll join a welcoming and diverse Sociology team in the Henry Daysh building, right at the center of campus.
Sociology at Newcastle is proud of its researchers’ commitment to exploring core sociological areas of contemporary importance, while embracing the benefits of interdisciplinarity.
You'll be taught by world-leading experts, working at the cutting edge of the topics they teach.
Our staff work with local, regional, national and international organisations, including the:
- North of Tyne Combined Authority
- NHS
- Department for Agriculture, Food and Rural, Affairs
- European Commission
- United Nations
We're also proud to support the important work that the North East Child Poverty Commission is leading. They have their offices within our Sociology department.
Wherever possible, we try to influence policy. Our research agenda prioritises research aimed at making a real difference and focuses on addressing inequalities, disadvantage and exclusion. We want to achieve social justice across society, and we use case studies from our research to inform our teaching.
Our degrees are flexible and offer opportunities to hone your research skills, specialise in your area of interest and if wanted, take interdisciplinary modules or others from outside Sociology.
Alongside your studies, we offer a range of activities to help you make the most of your degree, ranging from tailored induction activities to strengthen academic skills, academic talks, careers talks and social activities. We have active research clusters where we present our work internally and we also invite external speakers.
