Research Interests

My research interests are in the cultural and political history of Italy and Europe in the twentieth century, particularly Fascism, anti-Fascism, emigration, political exile, and the Second World War from the civilians' perspective.

Current Work

During September-December 2012 I carried out research at the British School at Rome as Balsdon Fellow. I am currently working on a project on 'In Search of the White International: Catholic Communism between the Wars'.

From October 2007 to October 2010 I was involved in the AHRC funded project on 'Bombing, States and Peoples in Western Europe 1940-1945', investigating the impact of bombing on civilians in Britain, Germany, France and Italy. Postgraduate Supervision

I welcome proposals from postgraduates who are interested in any aspect of the political, cultural and social history of Italy in the 20th century; on the impact of bombing in the Second World War in Europe; on the relationship between radical politics and religion in the 20th century; and on the experience of anti-Fascist exile in the interwar period.
