Background
I do early medieval studies and my work has been focused on Northumbria where I have conducted excavations on settlements and studies on the kingship site of Yeavering. Along with Max Adams, I established the Bernician Studies Group (BSG) within a community and university lifelong learning setting. The BSG is currently engaged on a study of the Cenel Eogan territory of the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal in the Irish Republic. Our initial work here has concentrated on magnetometry survey of the early ecclesiastical sites of Carrowmore, Clonca and Cooley/Moville and, in collaboration with Richard Tipping of the University of Stirling, we have begun a geomorphological study of the landscape setting of Carrowmore and Clonca. The Group is also engaged on a study of relict ancient woodland within Northumberland.
