Dr Fergus Campbell

Dr Fergus Campbell is Reader in Social and Cultural History. He was educated at St Margaret Mary's school, Carlisle, the Newman school, Carlisle and at the universities of Oxford and Bristol, and has lectured in both British and Irish history at the Queen's University, Belfast, and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth before becoming a lecturer in history at Newcastle University in August 2004. His research focuses on Irish social, cultural and political history between the Great Famine (1845-9) and the present, and also the history of psychoanalysis in Britain and Ireland during the 20th and 21st centuries. I have written three books and a number of articles on various aspects of modern Irish history including Land and Revolution (Oxford University Press, 2005) and The Irish Establishment, 1879-1914 (Oxford University Press, 2009). My current work is on the history of psychoanalysis in Britain and Ireland c. 1914-to the present; and I have recently published 'Freud in Dublin? The formation of psychoanalysis in Ireland, c. 1928-1993' in History Workshop Journal, 95, Spring 2023, pp. 101-130. I have completed the manuscript of my book, Freud in Ireland: a history of clinical psychoanalysis in Belfast, Cork and Dublin, 1928-2025 which is currently being considered for publication by the readers at Cork University Press.
My research is on the history of psychoanalysis in Britain and Ireland. My monograph Freud in Ireland: a history of clinical psychoanalysis in Belfast, Cork and Dublin, 1928-2025 is currently being considered for publication by Cork University Press. I have a complete draft of the book ready to publish. My second major project is a history of the British Psychoanalytical Society, 1919-2029. With the support of the BPAS, I have conducted more than 40 interviews with senior members of the Society and I am preparing a book proposal for submission to Cambridge University Press.
