Project description

My PhD is a collaborative partnership between two universities (Newcastle and Cardiff) and English Heritage. I am examining coinage in the northern frontier zone.

My research focuses on analysing the supply, usage and non-usage, and loss of coins at Hadrian’s Wall and within the northern frontier zone. Despite the long history of research on this part of the Roman Empire, there is no comprehensive overview or analysis of the numismatic data. Hadrian’s Wall and the northern frontier zone has unfortunately been lagging behind other areas of the Roman Empire in this regard. This is despite the important work done by several key figures in numismatics.

My PhD research will address this gap and several of the key issues raised in the research framework for this area. Once the research is complete, I will make the dataset generated by my research publically accessible via the Archaeological Data Service.

Fieldwork experience

I have taken part in fieldwork for numerous projects. Supervising geophysical survey teams in both the UK (Corbridge) and Romania (Apulum Hinterland Project), taking part in excavations (Lufton Roman Villa and Maryport Temples) and field walking in Naxos.
