Student life

Newcastle is friendly, multicultural and safe. The city centre is just a few minutes' walk from the campus, and we're also close to the beach and countryside.

Student life

At Newcastle, you will build relationships with fellow students from around the world. Newcastle University Students' Union (NUSU) has over 200 societies and sports clubs you can join, including:

These courses are conducted on our campus and prepare you for studying with us.

English language requirements

If your first language isn't English you will generally need an IELTS score of 6.5, or equivalent, to study at Newcastle University.

Our English language requirements section also lists the alternative English language qualifications we accept. 

If you don't meet our English language requirements, extra support is available. You could also complete a pre-sessional course to help improve your English before you start your degree. We provide these at our INTO Newcastle, if you will be studying in Newcastle.

You will also receive language support throughout the course of your studies.

Visa

Scholarships and discounts

If you would like to study at Newcastle University, we have a number of schemes that applicants from India can take advantage of:

• Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships for undergraduate study. 250 awards of £6,000 towards tuition fees are available for students from Bahrain, Canada, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, USA or Vietnam
• Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarships for postgraduate study 500 awards of £7000 towards tuition fees are available for students studying a Masters degree from the following countries; India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand or Vietnam.
• Vice-Chancellor Global Scholarships for postgraduate study £4000 tuition fee awards for outstanding international applicants who apply to commence full-time Master’s studies.
• Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies Up to 50% or 100% tuition fee awards awards for outstanding applicants who apply for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study at Newcastle University.
• Newcastle University Overseas Research Scholarship (NUORS). We are pleased to offer a small number of University funded NUORS awards for outstanding international students who apply to commence research PhD studies in 2025/26. See full eligibility criteria 
• Chevening Scholarships for postgraduate study The UK government’s global postgraduate scholarship programmes.
• Commonwealth Scholarships Supporting innovators and leaders of the future from across the Commonwealth, available to postgraduate applicants.

Cost of living

Newcastle upon Tyne is a budget-friendly city for international students, compared to other UK cities. This is because:

• the rent tends to be lower than the UK average
• many amenities are within walking distance of your accommodation
• the city is very compact, with most of the shops, theatres, cafes and restaurants a few minutes' walk from the campus
• there are many discounts for students
