Landscape Policy Partnerships Workshop at the Sill, Northumberland National Park

Centre for Landscape project ‘Landscape Policy Partnerships Workshop with the Northumberland National Park Authority

On Friday 10th May, The Centre for Landscape held the first workshop of the Landscape Policy Partnerships project with a key partner – Northumberland National Park Authority (NNPA). With the kind assistance of the NNPA, this was held at the National Landscape Discovery Centre, The Sill, Northumberland. The event was arranged at the National Park by its Head of Engagement Sarah Burn. The event brought together 30 people, comprising researchers from Newcastle and Heads of Department and Project Officers from the NNPA.

The day started with an introduction to the Centre and the project by Prof. Sam Turner, followed by an introduction to the NNPA and its strategic plans from Director of Business Development, Rosie Thomas. Provocations were presented from Newcastle University by Prof. Sally Shortall on issues of the rural economy, and Dr Elizabeth Lawson on issues of water policy, and from the NNPA by Steven Lipscombe on the ‘Hadrian’s Wall Recovering Nature project’. The whole group were involved in the wide-ranging and lively discussions, which were developed by break-out groups in the afternoon. These covered landscape strategies, agriculture, nature recovery, health and wellbeing, protection and development, access and engagement, climate, biodiversity, historic environment, tranquillity…focusing on links to policy. The day was closed by Prof. Maggie Roe who noted the considerable potential for future collaborations with policy implications. The group indicated a strong interest in sustaining these links, and we hope this workshop will be followed up subsequent events and ongoing connections.

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped make this such an enjoyable and interesting day. We look forward to sharing further details of this partnership and the project.

The project is led by Centre for Landscape Co-Directors Prof. Maggie Roe and Prof. Sam Turner, with Dr Charlotte Veal and Dr Maria Duggan with Eleanor Harrison as the Centre for Landscape Intern for 2023-2024 to work on this project. This project is supported by the NUCoRE (Newcastle University Centres of Research Excellence) QR-Policy Support Fund at Newcastle University.
