About Maria

I am an archaeologist and researcher, with interests in the coastal landscapes of the European Atlantic Seaboard and Mediterranean. I originally studied at Liverpool University, before working as a commercial archaeologist across the north west of Britain and in Turkey. After returning to my home city of Newcastle, I worked in public sector administration, before completing a PhD in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology.

I was very happy to stay at Newcastle on being awarded a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship. My project, which involved a year-long placement at the British School at Athens, focused on the site of Tintagel in Cornwall. My research incorporates artefacts and historic landscapes, and I am keen on transdisciplinary approaches, particularly in integrating ceramic distributions with evidence for agricultural production and mineral extraction to investigate ancient economic systems.

During my time at Newcastle I have participated in several research projects in association with the McCord Centre for Landscape. I have experience of co-developing national and international research projects and funding bids, and enjoy working with researchers and partners from diverse fields to build new collaborations and networks.

I am excited to take on this new role and to act as a point of contact for the Centre for Landscape (NUCoRE). I am looking forward to meeting everyone already associated with the Centre, and to welcoming new researchers to connect with us as part of the Centre’s aims to cultivate excellent, inclusive, and influential landscape research.
