Staff Profile
Bronwen joined Newcastle Law School as a lecturer in September 2014. She is Module Leader for Land Law (UG stage 1) and International Intellectual Property Law (LLM), and teaches patent law on Patents and Trademark law (UG Stage 3). She is module leader for Key Concepts in Corporate and Commercial Law, and teaches Comparative Law on the Fundamentals of Legal Translation, interdisciplinary courses taught in the School of Modern Languages.
Her PhD thesis addresses international issues in IP. Entitled, Implementing TRIPS (the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Agreement) in Egypt: a Postcolonial Analysis, it combines her love of Egypt with her interest in IP. Bronwen previously lived and worked in Egypt. She taught for ten years at the American University in Cairo (AUC), and worked in Egypt as writer, editor, and instructor. Notably, she taught Human Rights and Legal English courses to both the Judiciary and to Human Rights activists in Egypt for America-Middle East Educational and Training Services (AMIDEAST), which is what inspired her to study law.
Bronwen achieved an LLM in International Legal Studies (with distinction), and a PhD from Newcastle Law School. She completed her academic law qualification (GDL) at Northumbria Law School where she went on to teach from 2010-2014. Her other academic qualifications include a BA (Hons) in English Literature from Sheffield University and an MA in Applied Linguistics from Newcastle University. She also has a number of teaching qualifications (including the Newcastle Teaching Award) and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has specialised in teaching Property Law, in particular Land Law and aspects of IP Law, in particular Patent law. Other law subjects previously taught include Contract Law, Legal Institutions and Methods, and Equity and Trusts. She has supervised a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in the area of IP.
She has acted as rapporteur on behalf of the European Patent Office (EPO) for European Intellectual Property Teachers’ Network (EIPTN) meetings 2008-2010. In March 2016, Bronwen became an Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) qualified mediator. She has acted as PhD external examiner.
Bronwen’s research interests are focused on aspects of property law including cultural property and intellectual property (IP), legal history, language and law, comparative law, and postcolonialism and law.
