Canvas Dashboard

The Canvas Dashboard is the main landing page for users when they log into Canvas, providing a centralised view of all courses and important information. It includes course cards for quick access, a global navigation menu, a to-do list for upcoming tasks.

Canvas Dashboard Cards

Course cards on the Canvas Dashboard provide a visual overview of your favourited courses. Each card represents a different course and includes key information such as the course name, code, and term.

Course cards can display up to three tabs representing Assignments (1), Announcements (2) and Discussions (3). These tabs reflect the visibility and order set by the instructor in the Course Navigation. These also include unread Indicators, if there are new discussions or announcements, an unread icon will appear on the respective tab.

Canvas Course Cards Customisation (1)

You can customise several aspects of a Canvas course card to better organise and personalise your Dashboard:

By selecting the Colour tab (1) you can customise the following:

  • Nickname: You can add a nickname to each course card to make it easier to identify your courses. (2)
  • Colour: You can change the colour of each course card. This colour will also sync with the course colour in the Calendar. (3)

By selecting the Move tab (4) you can customise the following:

  • Order: You can rearrange the order of your course cards by dragging and dropping them on the Dashboard. Alternatively, you can use the options menu on each course card. Click the three dots (More Options icon), select the “Move” option, and choose where you want to place the card (e.g., to the top, ahead or behind a specific card, or to the bottom of the Dashboard).
  • Favourites: You can mark courses as favourites to prioritise them on your Dashboard. Only favourite courses will appear on the Dashboard.

Other Customisation Options

Other customisations include:

Image: Instructors can add an image to the course card, which will display behind a colour overlay. This image can be a solid colour, a stock image, or a custom image. This is edited in the Course settings for the course.

Adding/Removing Canvas Course Cards from your Dashboard

1. Click on “Courses” in the global navigation menu on the left side of the screen and select “All Courses” to view a list of all your enrolled courses.

2. Star the courses you want to appear on your dashboard by clicking the star icon next to each course name. The star will turn solid, indicating that the course is now a favourite. To remove courses, clicking the solid star icon next to the course name, will remove the course from the dashboard.

3. Return to your dashboard to see the newly added/removed course cards.

NOTE: The Canvas Dashboard can display a maximum of 20 course cards at a time. If a course is favourited but not visible on the dashboard, it may be because you have exceeded this limit. To view all your favorited courses, navigate to the “All Courses” section under the “Courses” menu.

To Do (2)

The To Do list shows assignments that need grading. Each item includes the assignment name, course name, number of submissions, and due date (1). This helps you stay on top of grading tasks across all your courses.

To clear this item from your to do list, click the X next to the item (2).

Coming Up (3)

The Coming Up section on the Canvas Dashboard is a useful tool for managing upcoming tasks and events. The coming up section is located on the right of the Dashboard, as shown in 1. You can also access your calendar from here, as shown in 2.

This section will display:

  • Assignments and Quizzes: This section displays assignments and quizzes that are due soon. It helps you keep track of what needs to be graded or reviewed.
  • Events: Any upcoming events, such as scheduled meetings or important dates, are listed here. This ensures you stay informed about key dates and deadlines.

The Coming Up section shows items that are due within the next seven days.
