I am mononymous (i.e., has only one name) following the custom of my ethnic minority community in China. I am a higher education researcher-practitioner with broad interests in inclusion and navigating the experiences of international and minoritised cohorts. I am keen on developing research-informed practice, sharing knowledge and resources for inclusive and ethical internationalisation practices.
My current role is Professional Development Adviser at the Learning and Teaching Development Service, where my teaching and research focus broadly on the teaching and learning provision in the wider context of the internationalisation of higher education. I am particularly interested in research and practices around international students' access, engagement and success in postgraduate taught (PGT) and postgraduate research (PGR) settings.
Prior to joining LTDS, I was a researcher in the Department of Education Studies at the University of Warwick, working on the Research England Enhancing Research Culture Fund-funded project Pre-Application Doctoral Communications after completing my PhD at the University of Glasgow.
My primary areas of interest are student access, engagement and success, teaching and learning provisions, internationalisation of Higher Education and educational research methods, particularly in postgraduate taught (PGT) and postgraduate research (PGR) settings. My thesis project examines Chinese international students’ multifaceted engagement and their developmental trajectories while studying in UK master’s programmes. My PhD thesis employs the meta-construct of student engagement, as a vital indicator of the quality of student experience, to explore Chinese international students’ experiences at two UK universities within a qualitative multi-methods design.
My empirical research spans the substantive fields of higher education, educational psychology and professional development. My methodological approach is to develop and employ qualitative research tools (e.g., audio diaries and art-based research) that can access and embrace the rich and nuanced accounts of experience of international, intercultural learning and communication, knowledge construction and developmental paths.
I am convening diary method community with Emily Henderson [Warwick] and Ahmad Akkad [Oxford] to provide a platform for sharing resources and raising awareness of diary method, particularly in relation to critical social sciences research.
