Class of 2015 – PhD success
In 2015 Newcastle welcomed its first undergraduate physics cohort in over a decade. Out of a class of just under 40 students, 6 stayed on in Newcastle to complete PhD’s.
This year sees the pioneering cohort completing their doctoral studies with us, and after 8 years, many of them are moving on to careers outside the North East. We took the opportunity to have a mini-reunion before they all go their separate ways.
Christian studied Perovskite Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators, Amy is Fabricating solid-state dye-sensitised solar cells, Peter is developing better models for impact ionization in semiconductor simulations, Joe is working on metamaterials and plasmonics to find exotic ways of controlling light at the nanoscale, while Toby is part of the doctoral centre for sustainable electric propulsion and Luke is fabricating optical fibres via 'pressure-assisted melt-filling'.
A further 2 students pursued PhD’s at other Universities; Matthew Littlefair at Durham and Imogen Cresswell at Boulder, Colorado US.
Left to right: Joe Riley, Peter Brookes-Chambers, Toby Middlebrook, Amy Neild, Luke Stocks & Christian Johnson-Richards.
