MSP staff STFC Success!
This STFC grant will allow eight researchers (Principal Investigators: Dr. Celine Guervilly, Prof. Tamara Rogers, Dr. Cora Uhlemann and Dr. Toby Wood; Co-Investigators: Dr. Andrew Baggaley, Prof. Carlo Barenghi, Dr. Joachim Harnois-Deraps, Dr. Graeme Sarson) in the school to study astrophysical problems ranging from planets to cosmology. All but one of the successful PIs are early career scientists (Guervilly, Uhlemann, Wood), and all but one are female (Guervilly, Rogers, Uhlemann). One project will investigate the generation of Mercury’s magnetic field, one will investigate waves in stars, one will study neutron star physics and finally, one will use statistical methods to understand fundamental cosmological parameters. Each of these projects will fund a postdoctoral researcher, staff time, travel and computing. This is the most successful STFC bid in the School’s history and the success of these grants will increase STFC studentships to the school from around 1 per year to 3-4 per year (over three years), so there will be more PhD students working on astrophysics in the School than ever before.
