Global Opportunity: Outreach Trip to Cyprus “This trip has helped me to gain a place on an initial teacher training course as not many other applicants had international experience in teaching.”
About Nicole
Can you tell us about the outreach trip you went on?
I went to the Cyprus - Xenion High School, Paralimni for three weeks.
What made you want to take part in the trip?
It gave me the opportunity to gain experience in teaching mathematics, which is a career that I am interested in. I have now gained a place on an initial teacher training course for next year. Also, I had never been to Cyprus before and was really interested in the cultural aspects of the trip and exploring a new country.
How did you prepare for the trip?
I had meetings with the other participants, Lee Fawcett and Joe Matthews to arrange things like flights and accommodation as well as plan the workshops that we then delivered in the schools.
What was your experience of staying in a new location like?
I loved experiencing the difference in culture and trying new foods. As one of the trip participants was Cypriot he was able to show us more authentic parts of the island.
Can you tell us about some of the skills you gained from this trip?
This trip has definitely helped me to gain a place on an initial teacher training course as not many other applicants had international experience in teaching. It also helped with my communication skills as I needed to be clear and precise whilst being mindful that the pupils' first language was not English.
Did you enjoy the trip? Can you tell us about some of your highlights?
I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. My favourite things included a meal at the restaurant Zanettos in Nicosia which allowed me to sample many different Cypriot dishes and a boat tour around Paphos.
What would your advice be for anyone who is currently studying your course and considering taking part in an outreach trip?
Do it!! I made lots of new friends from the trip so I now know more people on my course and it was an amazing experience.
