About Daryna
Why did you choose to study your degree at Newcastle University?
It was essential for me that Newcastle University was willing to provide support and resources for refugees like myself. It’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment made me confident that it was the right place for me. Also, the location of the city itself played a role since it is a coastal city situated next to stunning Northumberland and Scotland. So overall it seemed like a perfect fit.
What was the support from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics like when you first started?
When I first arrived, I felt lost, but the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics helped a lot. Everyone in the office was very friendly and always willing to help and answer all my questions and emails. The Induction Week also helped me to understand what you can expect from the School and what support they provide. On top of this, my Personal Tutor was especially supportive and made me feel that he was always there for me when I needed it.
Are you enjoying your degree? Can you tell us about some of your highlights to date?
There are many opportunities at Newcastle University to combine social life with studies, and the Hadrian’s Wall walk I have done with EcoSoc is by far my favourite. However, the best experience and highlights are always about people you are with, not the places.
What has your favourite module been so far?
I believe that a lecturer’s attitude and approach play a significant role in shaping a student’s interest and enthusiasm towards a particular module. The way a lecturer conducts lectures, communicates with students, and encourages their participation can make a massive difference in the learning experience. So my favourite module so far is Bayesian Inference, mainly because of the lecturer’s approach.
Are you a member of any societies? If so, could you tell us how you got involved in them and what you enjoy about them?
I am on the committee of the Ecological Society and got there thanks to friends I met during some volunteer tasks. Societies are a great way to meet “your people” and do whatever you enjoy with them. It helps to take your mind off university work and relax a bit.
What is your favourite thing about Newcastle as a city?
I like that the city is not too big and not too small and basically everything you need is within walking distance. It is a student-oriented city with very friendly people, which makes it a comfortable place to live.
