About Dimitris

Why did you choose to study your degree at Newcastle University?

It was a combination of the incredible, active student life in Newcastle, and the University's prestige in the Mathematics department. I wanted to make the most of my student life, and Newcastle University felt like the right place!

What was the support from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics like when you first started?

Unlike a lot of my course mates, I was under quarantine during most of Induction Week in Stage 1. I was separated from the events happening on campus, however our Transition Officer kept in touch helped me keep track with all of the daily updates for my course. Navigating through the induction material was quite simple and easily accessible.

Are you enjoying your degree? Can you tell us about some of your highlights to date?

I am enjoying all sorts of aspects of my degree, from a wide range of modules to the extracurricular activities on campus. I always look forward to meeting some of my lecturers during their in-person office hours and discussing the possibilities of mathematics beyond our modules. One of my biggest highlights are the sports club socials, it's always fun to get out there and socialise with students beyond my course.

What has your favourite module been so far?

My favourite module has to be Scientific Computation with Python. Dr Chris always puts a smile on my face whenever he puts some sort of joke or reference within his worksheets. I'll never forget when we sat down during his practical trying to parametrise Christmas trees into Pythons plotting module. I also can't help but mention the Differential Equations, Transforms and Waves module I am currently underway with Professor Shukurov. Every lecture is aimed towards teaching us how to work and gives us in depth tuition behind what we are doing rather than spending our time solely on the lecture notes.

Are you a member of any societies? If so, could you tell us how you got involved in them and what you enjoy about them?

I am a member of the Brazilian Jiu Jutsu sports club. I've always really wanted to join some sort of martial art, and now was the perfect time. BJJ is extremely fun, and the club is quite beginner friendly, they make sure no one falls behind.

What is your favourite thing about Newcastle as a city?

Newcastle is a city with brilliant architecture and scenic views, and a very lively population. The best thing about Newcastle is you don't run out of things to do!

What advice would you give to international students considering studying your degree at Newcastle University?

My biggest advice to international students is - talk. Get to know as many people within your degree and ask as many questions as possible whenever you need help.
