About Kaushik
Why did you choose to study your degree at Newcastle University?
I was always interested in pursuing a career within Statistics. When I was exploring my options for university, my Maths teachers who were former students of the University all had positive things to say about their time studying here. I had the same kind of positivity when I attended the Offer Holder Event and interacted with current students and staff. All these factors combined helped me choose Newcastle University to study a Mathematics and Statistics degree.
What was the support from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics like when you first started?
I was quite satisfied with the level of support offered by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. I think my interactions with the Transition Officer were the most effective and reassuring. Similarly, having a Peer Mentor too helped me during the early stages. Generally, most staff were quite helpful and understanding when necessary.
Are you enjoying your degree? Can you tell us about some of your highlights to date?
Yes, I'm thoroughly enjoying my degree. I started from a point where I was anxious by the level of practical/coding elements I had to learn and now, I wish there was more of such practical/coding aspects to the course. Some of my highlights include winning the "Course Rep of the Year (UG)" in Stage 1, being nominated for the "Pride of Newcastle University" award and winning the “Cities of our Future Challenge 2021” hosted by the Careers Service. I’ve also enjoyed my time as a Student Ambassador and Peer Mentor.
What has your favourite module been so far?
Generally, I've enjoyed all Statistics modules but to name a few, Stochastic Financial Modelling, Python Coding Module and Survival Analysis.
What is the student community like within your subject?
Quite good I feel, especially given the fact that our cohort had the Stage 1 entirely online and missed out on numerous in-person events. This has definitely strengthened the student community. The students from other Stages (seniors) are also helpful.
What advice would you give to international students considering studying your degree at Newcastle University?
I'd definitely encourage them to apply as the quality of the course is on par and the cost of living is relatively affordable and there is a vibrant student life. You can always approach students/staff to learn more and have all the information before making a firm decision. Once you are successful, you will be supported until you settle in and you will not be left out.
