Background
Prof Peter Gore has more than 33 years experience in medical product design and has worked internationally before setting up his own firm ADL Smartcare Limited in 2002 which develops Decision Support Systems and services around healthy ageing. He served for several years as expert evaluator for the European Commission, in ageing & disability, and monitored several projects as a Project Technical Assistant, and continues to review research projects. He joined Newcastle University as a Professor of Practice in healthy ageing in 2007. He is a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics WG on the future of ageing.
Roles and Responsibilities
Prof of Practice Peter Gore works with the National Innovation Centre for Ageing particularly around the role of technology, the Internet of Caring Things,
- To support the work of the National Innovation Centre for Ageing
- To use business knowledge and ‘real world’ experience to encourage entrepreneurial activities and bridge the gap between industry and academia
- To support innovation and commercialisation of research
Prof of Practice Peter Gore works in the healthy ageing domain with a variety of stakeholders across the University, industry (large and small), public and charitable sectors in the UK, NZ, Australia in particular. He is a co-founder of the 4GKi multi-generational kitchen initiative with world leading Designer Johnny Grey and the wider industry.
Research Interests
Working with the National Innovation Centre for Ageing, in particular around aspirational design for older people and multi-generational living.
- Supports colleagues in identifying research applications and application submissions, helping assemble steering committees etc.
- Interested in new sustainable business models in supporting older people.
- Particular interest in the appropriate use of various technologies to support healthy ageing in practice, and user/carer interaction with technology.
- The malleability of ageing and the practical implications of the concept of Compression of Functional Design - published in 2018.
- Advisor to the ISCF Healthy Ageing sponsored 'Homes for Living' programme.

Member of Nuffield Council Bioethics Working Group on the future of ageing.
Speaker and advisor on achieving healthy ageing in practice to a wide range of stakeholders including governments, health & social care providers in the UK and overseas.
