Language Support
Improve your language skills ahead of your study abroad experience.
The Language Resource Centre
Whether or not you need to speak the language of your host country depends on your programme and destination.
If you're studying in the language of your host country, it's expected that you have sufficient knowledge of that language. Many of our partner institutions offer modules in English, therefore, fluency in the language is not always necessary. It depends on where you choose to study.
Our Language Resource Centre can help you improve your existing language skills or learn a new language.
Many of our partner universities offer beginner-level classes in the native language. We encourage you to sign up for these during your exchange to develop your linguistic skills and help you settle into your host country.
Our partner universities in China, Japan, and Latin America teach almost exclusively in their native language. To go to one of these universities, you usually have to be studying one of these languages as part of your degree programme.
The University-Wide Language Programme
If you're serious about learning a language during your time at Newcastle, the University-Wide Language Programme (UWLP) is for you.
The UWLP allows you to take languages classes for free alongside your current degree, with credits earned being recognised on your transcript as extra credit.
This programme includes weekly classes and has 11 languages on offer for 2025/26!
