Fees, funding and Global Scholarship
Find out how to fund your short-term opportunity
We know the benefits that undertaking a global experience can bring, but before making any decisions, it’s important to consider how you will fund your placement.
The cost will depend on the type of short-term opportunity you chose. All prices will be included in our Summer Brochure and will be detailed in full on partner websites.
Some programmes might include accommodation or certain activities like a social and cultural programme in the price – make sure to check what’s included so you can budget accordingly.
If you chose a programme with an External Partner (For example Operation Wallacea, Think Pacific etc), you can find out more information on the costs of these experiences on their websites.
GO Global Scholarship
The University is pleased to offer the ‘GO Global Scholarship’ to help support students from underrepresented groups to undertake a global placement in 2025.
Further information is detailed below and outlined on our Scholarships page and accompanying terms and conditions. Please read these carefully before making an application, as you will be required to provide evidence of eligibility as part of the application process. Scholarships will be allocated on a rolling basis.
The scholarships are only available for Global Opportunities approved programmes. These are summer schools organised by our Exchange Partners, programmes with our partner External Organisations or internships with the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
There are three values of award depending on the opportunity undertaken:
- £1,500 for placements in EU countries
- £2,000 for placements in Non-EU countries
- £500 for virtual placements
The Scholarship should be used on approved placements taking place between the end of May 2025 and early September 2025. Placements must be undertaken outside of the academic term.
Payment of the Scholarship will be made on confirmation of the placement (for example a placement offer or registration document from the host organisation), and once students have met all of the necessary administrative requirements.
We anticipate a high demand for Scholarships. Funding will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis throughout the application period.

Sustainable Travel Grant
Newcastle University is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.
The sustainable travel grant is a one off additional payment of £350 for Undergraduate students in receipt of the GO Global Scholarship who are travelling to destinations in the EU and who make the conscious decision to manage their entire trip (this includes both the outbound and return journey to/from the UK), via more climate conscious modes of transport – for example, train, bus and ferry.
Full details can be found on the Sustainable Travel Grant webpage.
Applications for the grant can only be made once students have been awarded a GO Global Scholarship and have had their programme place confirmed.
