Aims

This module aims to introduce students to the concept of diversity management. Specifically, the module aims to provide students with theoretical and conceptual tools that will help them gain an understanding of the British and European contexts of workforce diversity, the changing practices of governments, organisations and human resource practitioners, as well as the changing policy landscape. The module also aims to encourage students to consider the intersection of different dimensions of inequality (inequality strands such as gender, age, ethnicity, etc.).

Employee development and diversity/equality

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Apply an intersectional approach to the understanding of inequalities
2. Critically examine equality and diversity within a legal, social, economic and human resource management context
3. Discuss and articulate the shift from equal opportunities to diversity, developing a critical analysis of the ethical tensions within the business case for diversity management.

Intended Skill Outcomes

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

1.       Critically reflect on, synthesise and evaluate relevant literature and debates
2.       Demonstrate effective communicative and analytical skills.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

The module combines formal lectures with group teaching. The lectures introduce students to key concepts, theoretical and policy frameworks, and debates. Seminars are designed to provide students with a safe space for extended debate and critique, based on completion of structured guided learning activities. Drop in surgeries are designed to provide students with opportunities for formative feedback and structured discussion.
