Aims
This module provides an academic-focused alternative to the consultancy project and advanced business topics modules. Drawing on their learning across their programme of study, the module provides students with an opportunity to apply their learning to a small-scale research project on a specific topic. This module aims to provide students with an opportunity to:
• Collect and evaluate empirical evidence to inform their understanding of contemporary management practice and thought; and
• Further develop adaptability, curiosity and independence in their thought, with the ability to appreciate ethical aspects inherent in management research and decision making.
Outline Of Syllabus
There is no set syllabus for this module because it will involve independent research into a topic of contemporary scholarly importance in the fields of management, human resources, international business, innovation, and enterprise, as chosen by students themselves. Students will be encouraged to consider choosing research areas related to the core disciplines of their programme (e.g. management, human resources, strategy, international business, innovation, and enterprise) in semester 1. Students will then select one area for independent investigation supported by an appropriate supervisor. The module aims to develop student decision making, research and project management skills. This module provides an alternative for those who want to extend their learning through the design and execution of a research project, including the option to conduct a systematic literature review, in relation to a topic for which they have interest and enthusiasm.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have:
• An understanding of formulating and applying management research that enables you to devise and sustain arguments, and/or to solve problems
• A systematic understanding of how to develop an evidence base in answer to research questions, interrogating complex and ambiguous problems from multiple perspectives
• Knowledge of the ethical challenges and tensions that are inherent in management research contexts
Intended Skill Outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
• Apply the methods and techniques that they have learned to review, consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge and understanding, and to initiate and carry out projects
• Gather, synthesise and evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative information for decision-making in a range of organisational settings
• Critically evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data (that may be incomplete), to make judgements applied to practice, and to frame appropriate questions
• Function as an independent learner, critical thinker and reflective practitioner, making use of scholarly reviews and primary/secondary sources

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The module consists of a mix of taught sessions, structured guided learning, and supervision. It is structured as follows:
• The taught sessions will: refresh student knowledge and understanding of research methods; support them in project design and ethical research execution; writing the dissertation and reflective practice
• The supervision sessions will provide tailored support to the students in the development of their individual assessment.

The module provides students with the opportunity to apply their learning to the range of research activities which are related to the range of topics they have studied throughout their programme of study.
