Aims
To introduce the principles of satellite geodesy and positioning, in particular the high-precision use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) with special emphasis on the Global Positioning System (GPS).

The GNSS carrier phase observable
Atmospheric errors
Relative positioning and differencing techniques
Linear combinations of GNSS observations
Ambiguity resolution techniques
Kinematic and RTK GNSS positioning
Third party GNSS data and products
Instruments, applications, field procedures and observation processing
Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and its applications
Geophysical site motions and reference frames
Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and gravity field satellite missions.
Learning Outcomes
Intended Knowledge Outcomes
Students should gain knowledge of satellite geodesy, in particular the detailed theoretical aspects of precise GNSS positioning, including processing methods, error sources, and interpretation of the results. Satellite orbits and other satellite geodetic techniques will be introduced.
Intended Skill Outcomes
The module covers all of the intermediate level theory of GNSS positioning through detailed study of GPS, such that it will equip students with the skills to use GNSS in a practical and sensible manner. It will provide students with the essentials for further advanced study or practical application.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
The lecture series is designed to impart theoretical knowledge, understanding and skills which are supported and developed by focussed practical sessions. A structured reading list allows students to manage their learning patterns and provides the opportunity to increase their depth of learning. Team working and problem solving are practiced and assessed.
Fieldwork allows students to expand their skill base in practical GNSS surveying and consolidates underlying theory delivered in lectures. Computer-based practical sessions explore the analysis of this and other data.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The specialist knowledge and understanding acquired during this module are assessed by means of an unseen written examination, data processing, computation, data interpretation and student reflection. Specific coursework submissions will allow the student to demonstrate their ability to execute, report on and synthesise practical work.
