Aims
This module introduces and practices competencies to enable students to learn and record self learning and development as the foundation of life long learning and CPD
Outline Of Syllabus
Competency is the ability to do something effectively. This module is filled with diverse learning and opportunities that provide a context for students to collect, develop and practice competencies in relation to their masters degree. These range from academic skills, enterprise skills, technical and numeracy skill through to the practical application of learning from taught modules in your programme, and the self-identification of outcomes.
This module sits alongside other technical and skills modules in Science, Agriculture and Engineering to frame and apply disciplinary knowledge and skills to graduate futures. A variety of approaches are unpacked and documented in NUReflect to provide a portfolio of evidence for the competency development alongside other MSc modules throughout the programme. This includes a Net Zero Innovation Bootcamp

Intended Knowledge Outcomes
By the end of the Module a successful student will:
Understand the importance of reflecting on and recognizing the responsibility for managing their own learning, through identifying and communicating the development of personal skills, and evaluating the impact of the progress on future employability
Understanding the practice of self-reflection and awareness and the translation of learning into competency
Identify the importance of personal and professional development, in relation to their studies and dissertation project
Intended Skill Outcomes
By the end of the Module a successful student will:
Have the ability to analyse and evaluate their competencies
Perform goal-setting throughout their course to enable the development of competency in delivering on their course and graduate objectives
Reflect on student development, initiative and resourcefulness in building and developing supportive networks around their entrepreneurial goals
Have an awareness, and be able to articulate their skills-gaps and how to address them.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lectures are designed to provide training to support students in developing the skills required Students will be introduced to theories relating to personal and professional development. The formal sessions are also used to introduce students to the assessment criteria and help them prepare for both the formative and summative assessments.
The reflective tool will be introduced and students will be encouraged to regularly update their profile and use the framework to support and facilitate the applied learning and development through reflection and critical analysis.
Self-directed learning resources are provided throughout the module to introduce students to the relevant literature and allow them to make links between their practical experiences and the knowledge and skills developed over the course

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
Students are expected to maintain a formative reflective record throughout the module. This will enable them to develop the portfolio. The written assessment will allow students to present and discuss their personal and professional learning and development in relation to transferable employability and research skills and will incorporate relevant literature on personal development.
