Aims
To introduce students to the academic culture of UK higher education and of Newcastle University
To provide students with the intellectual development necessary to get them ready for entry to UK HE and in particular for entry into Newcastle University
To ease the transition into UK HE
To develop key study skills required for the study of science and engineering in UK HE
Original Summary:
This module is designed to help students on INTO Foundation Programmes make the transition to UK HE by ensuring that they develop the study skills required and undergo the intellectual development needed. The module will also provide them with a thorough briefing about teaching, learning and assessment in UK HE, and will help them to absorb the academic culture of Newcastle University and of UK HE, which provides the context within which the module will be delivered.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Canvas materials will be used to provide the knowledge content of the module and to introduce skills through explanations, videos, and examples.
Smaller group sessions will be geared to the development of the skills which are the main
outcomes of this module by providing a safe environment in which these can be practised and where feedback will
be given. In particular seminars will be used for practising such skills as oral presentation, extracting and interpreting data. Development of appropriate ICT skills will be linked with development of manipulating and presenting data and oral presentation of data.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
A range of in-course assessment activities will assess the main intended learning outcomes of the module, viz. a portfolio to include, use of ICT, data analysis and extraction, library and information skills, group work, use of Word and Excel, organisational skills, as these are most appropriately assessed in this way rather than by examination. Examination techniques will not be formally assessed in this module but will be practiced to provide formative feedback.
