Aims
To gain an understanding of the issues relating to translation in the legal field, as well as the importance of technical knowledge in legal translation.
To introduce basic legal terms and concepts, particularly in the areas of contract, commercial and company law. The module covers key legal terms and concepts in commercial contracts, the structure of companies and the regulatory environment in which companies operate.

Issues in legal translation
Understanding the foundations of the English Legal System
Gain knowledge of the different concepts, principles and core vocabulary of contract law
Understand the legal underpinnings of corporate law in the UK (including the concepts of legal personality, limited liability and directors duties)
Develop knowledge of the different terms used within commercial and corporate law.
Gain knowledge of the different forms of business structures, and learn about the formation and death of corporations.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
Lecture materials will be delivered through a mix of recordings and other online learning activities, such as reading tasks (and will be non-synchronous). The lecture materials will be complimented by eight 1.5 hour group discussions ran as ‘seminars’, which are to be held on a synchronous basis (these can be ran online for FLEX purposes). The students will be able to interact not only with the instructor but each other and will therefore be able to grasp more easily the language used by lawyers and become familiar and comfortable with using those terms in practice. Two one hour live Q&A sessions will also be provided in which students can post questions on a discussion board and receive immediate responses from the instructor. The live chat will be saved and made available to students who were unable to attend the live session. This will also be complimented with drop-in surgeries towards the end of the course to allow students to discuss preparation for their assignment.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The assessment will take the form of a written exercise to be done in the students’ own time. The topic of the assessment will be notified to students once approved by the University’s external examiner.
