Aims

The module aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of the process and rationale for engineering design applied to small craft.

Outline Of Syllabus

The module enables students to review and practice the process of synthesis in the design of small craft.

Topics include:
The design process: mapping information flows, using models to process information. Synthesis of a preliminary yacht design: the design brief, basic vessels, scaling factors, lines generation, keel and rudder design, rig design, balance, general arrangement, scantlings, powering, weight calculation, stability analysis. Design tactics for small craft working vessels: tugs, fishing vessels.

Learning Outcomes

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
IKO1: Describe models of the design process at the philosophical, strategic and tactical level (C2).
IKO2: Synthesize a preliminary small craft design (C6).
IKO3: Undertake technical procedures necessary to solve sub problems of the design process, including hull development, yacht keel definition, sail plan development, general arrangement definition, and powering
specification (C1).
IKO4: Undertake evaluation procedures including: directional balance for a yacht, a weight calculation, and
stability analysis (C4, C5, C14).
IKO5: Identify appropriate tactical approaches to the design of a variety of vessel types including mono-hulled
yachts, tugs and fishing boats (C4).
IKO6: Apply Structural design aspects of marine craft (C1).
IKO7: Analyse the regulatory influence on design (C4).

Intended Skill Outcomes

Opportunities are afforded to develop the following subject-specific skills:
ISO1: Plan and organise for an extended and complex element of coursework (C16).
ISO2: Formulate a design brief from a clients' instructions and an elicitation process (C2, C16).
ISO3: Use an iterative process to synthesize a solution to an open-ended problem with no 'correct' answer (C1).
ISO4: Present a complex design concept in a report combining text and drawings (C5, C17).

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

Knowledge of design synthesis and the design process is delivered through lectures, and a greater in-depth appraisal is gained by undertaking the design exercise. This is embedded in a substantial piece of coursework which is developed in tandem with relevant lectures and tutorials during Semester 1 (IKO1,-7) and ISO1,-4).In Semester 2 the application of procedures learnt during the coursework exercise to other design situations is considered (IKO4).
